They said we always afraid to the unseen or something we cant predict. I found out that this character of chains could be something unpredictable. I rearranged and attached it one by one to built something I had in my dream. When it lays on the floor, its only a pile of chaotic black chains, but then when we try to pull out this chains and hang it on the wall, suddenly something appeared, a blurry image of a Longhorn skull.

A wooden trunk contains two furry pillows that mimicked the battery bear phenomena in China. We can open the lid and pull out the pillows and use it as a seat while the trunk as a table. Recently, I almost heard most of my friend complaining, how they really want a bigger working space in a smaller package. and after doing some simple observation by talking to them, unconsciously, most of them sometimes need to run from certain things but on the other hand, they don't want to separate from their own personal space.

Then I remember, as a kid, I used to have this cart full of colorful boxes and toys. where I could dragging it to wherever I want to and built my own playground. So I made this voluminous cart, containing certain furniture to create a basic working place. I made it colorful with this 'wise' raw-painted reclaimed wood to commemorate things in the past.

Where life was honest and wise.

The Last Quiet Day

In August 1883, during the Dutch colonization, in A region that later on become Indonesia, there happened a moment that changed the world. It was the day when the world exploded:

The Krakatoa eruption.

After doing some small research about it, I see that this incredible moment has changed almost everything. few days before the annihilation took place, all living creatures were worried for some reasons unknown.

This feeling of silence and uncertainty has led me to built an installation. I believed that, in the beginning of the great catastrophe, there was a moment of silence and uncertainty: a moment when we (supposed to) think almost nothing but feel almost about everything. When the great things become faint, mute and encourage a quite contemplation, then we know, how these big things are coming.

This triptych panoramic line drawing is a landscape view of Krakatoa, the volcanic island before the great eruption which drastically changed its demography. As seen from the north - th Lang island, we will see three mountain peak of Krakatoa island, from right to left were the Rakata (820m), Danan (450m), and Perboeatan (120m) and on the left side of the island we could see another stranded rocky island called the Verlaten island. I present this drawing as the last quiet day of Krakatoa island.

Cabinet of curiosities (also known as Kunstkammer, Wunderkammer, Cabinets of Wonder, or wonder-rooms) were encyclopedic collections of objects whose categorical boundaries were, in Renaissance Europe, yet to be defined. Modern terminology would categorized the objects included as belonging to natural history (sometimes faked), geology, ethnography, archaeology, religious or historical relics, works of art (including cabinet painting) and antiquities. The Wunderkammer was regarded as a microcosm or theater of the world, and a memory theater.

Carpentry skill is gained through experience study, and its really hard to be a carpenter. made this stool from scrap woods, and all i got is this unsteady piece of furniture. finally the manual book got its function as a supporter.

this work was made for an exhibition"everybody got mixed feelings about the function and the form" held in Goethe-Institut Library, Jakarta,Indonesia. I got the idea when I'm visiting the Goethe library, which was a really well-design place, very clean, efficient and functional like most of other Germany design. I cant helped myself to give something "wise" to this well-design place. I made this Indonesian domestic stool style (scrap-reclaimed woods with raw paint finish) and put it between two cultures-section bookshelves.

* the new generation mixes different aesthetic patterns, norms, principles, idioms, and media, which are perceived ambiguously by the audience. the difference between arts and design seems not to be discussed anymore. Little by little, we start to accept this instability between function and norm, function and form, between intuition and construction, free expression and specific message. contemporary art works invite us to something foreign. but the compositions touch the string of our daily problems.

* R Yuki also works with the medium of drawing, in which he present his fantasy about a world from another extremity, and one which often gives rise to a certain impression of coldness due to the forms. As he confronts his objects during his creative process, R Yuki often takes his imaginations to their farthest shore. He then plays with metaphors (or perhaps is more appropriate to call them "forms of association'), leading us to witness a transformation (or metamorphosis) from one object to another; a journey, a transparent move - who traces are easy to follow. In some of his works, we can easily find this concept.

R Yuki aesthetic ideas seems to hold back his emotions and intense expressions. R Yuki choose to work scrupulously - as if proving the strength of his logic. thence , R Yuki enter a unique stage in which two fields are combined: art and design. R Yuki deliberately makes use of the merging of the two disciples - although it has often happened on the field - to build his aesthetic vocabulary therefore making his creations seems so special.

In the hand of and artist, this domestic object (chairs) that we obliged to have around us loses its dictionary definition and becomes full of new significance that is as varied as the personality and state of mind of each creators found behind each of the works. In this way, chairs become a metaphor for life, for presence and for absence, for solitude and for company. As Henry David Thoreau wrote, “I had three chairs in my home. One for solitude, two for friendship and three for society”

* Seeing that he came from interior design, its no wonder that R Yuki is interested to furniture. We will still can see this when he plunge into art world, seeing how much his works related to furniture. His work in this exhibition might remind us to the furniture-sculpture. Made in its real size, a chair, in R Yuki work entitled The Crunch,Crunch, Crunch of the Bear can be used as a chair. That is why this work is more or less related to the problem of design.

R Yuki's work deals more than just the problem of design, it is also deals with the relation of design and imagination, design and memory an of course design and art. The seat and backrest of the chair which was made in the form of cracker biscuits invoke a memory of our childhood story, such as Hansel and Gretel. In addition, educated in the analytical tradition of design, had made R Yuki conscious of the function and appearance of things. These can be united into one, but also can be a nuisance to each other. A products can come to the user through a very long journey of design. The story of R Yuki's cracker chair got its final form in the display of three photos also appears alongside the chair.

As a finishing to the added function of his chair - also as a place to put the sling of a bag on - R Yuki trusted a bear to do it. A bear who lives in the imagination of the artist. A very sophisticated design problem solving! Now, he can rest his mind at ease because the bear's bite mark will surely hold the bag sling. Art can sometime give an unexpected way out to the problem of design.

Actually we live in a place what we call “a shared environment” . Something which we call a home sometimes is a home for the others too. But still, every human act as the superior, it seems that some of us start to forget this “a shared environment” term. Sometimes we feel disturbed by another’s life that surround us. we don’t want to know about it and trying to get rid of it. It think we owe something to those whose life been ruined by us.

A mouse hole were blocked with wood planks after the death of its owner. A bouquet of flower, a bottle of liquor, a cake and a letter in an envelope (all comes in mini sizes) were given as my eulogy to our domestic mini friend – Mr. mouse.

I've observed, how peaceful the chess player and act serious-silently while they are playing their game. It seems that they have their own world. I juxtaposed their serious-silently world with the underworld, a world of caves, full of stalactites and stalagmites - a silent world that full of battles.

maybe We don't realize that every time we are playing chess, we actually declaring a war ñ a peaceful war. Since it was a peaceful war, there are no black or white in my chess set. The board pattern itself made as a maze, which make it harder to play the game, because however, I think it is almost impossible to declare a real peaceful war.

I had memories back in my childhood. During the summer break, with a net and a plastic jar on my hand, Iím spending my time trying to catch insects to fulfill my curiosity. Instead of insects, one day I saw this big black bird flying over my head. I was amazed and I tried to catch it with my net, but I failed.

The excitement I had that day was more than every thing that time. It laid in my memories as one of my victory, a victory over the memorable passage of time. This work showing the black bird ironically landed on my net at the end of the day - as a mocking act, since I never caught it.

Act of Eating

.....The world is so rich in ceremonies and rituals concerning food and meals, as well as in the manners we use for accepting and enjoying the food we eat. The act of eating is tied to everything from religion and culture to history, politics, and education...even to the environment in general. On top of this, we each add our own eating habits as well.

the competition gist of theme encouraged me to observe peoples manner during their act of eating nowadays, so I made this poster campaign as a medium to give my perspective from what I've observed.

my works ; This crazy-fast growing world!

We found ourselves live where times don’t clicking in a normal way anymore. Technology has made us to live in a fast and in a very instant way. It seems that we spend more time to work and think about other things rather than to enjoy the life itself.

This thing also happens in our act of eating. People seems start to forget the delicacies of “the real food”, food that were made traditionally with natural ingredients, and served in its very own way. It’s happen because of one thing: people think they don’t have more time, and start to choose the fast–instant food. Unconsciously, they start to losing one of the great moments in life; the act of eating “real foods”.

These posters were made as a note for us to take more time and enjoy our act of eating. Visually represent three kind behaviors when a person losing their joy while they eat and all they thinking were just the clicking of time. So stop, take a break, be conscious and start to enjoy your food!

this experiment work was done in our graduation night. each music band who performs that night usually gave some gimmicks during their show. and this faux microphone (photocopied paper + corrugated board) were given to the audience, because everybody always love to sing and there are not enough “real” microphone for each audience. so I design this sing along - microphoney to fulfill everybody’s passion to sing that night... and the rest is a nonstop hits sing along!

National gallery. October 28 October – 30 November, 2008, Jakarta – Indonesia

Where does “design end? Where does “ art” begin? What connects the two? Where are they mutually exclusive? What makes an object of classic design, a living room suite for example, into an installation and thereby into art? Or how long is a floor lamp a piece of unusual and original design, and when does it become an object which clearly deserves to be called art?

This border between art and design, as unclear as it is fascinating, has been explored by 29 German and Indonesian artist whose work is shown in Come-in. The result sometimes peculiar, sometimes irritating, sometimes playful and ironic, always challenge and inspire both art and design.

On display is a great number of objects, installation, videos and photographs occupying over 800sqm.

Viewing the current developments of the visual arts from the perspective of market aggressiveness, the domination of painting, the fading of innovative energy, discovery, and experimentation, both aesthetically and in media, in the younger generation of artists, alih-alih (instead) presents young artists who are stubbornly oriented towards that which is different and interesting. They are artists who are fascinated with the potentials or possibilities of a ‘new language’ in the development of Indonesian visual arts.

From the perspective of professions, alih-alih also means a kind of shift between disciplines or conventions: a designer becomes an artist, a sculptor becomes a painter, a painter becomes a performance artist, etc.
From the perspective of the times, alih-alih means a pause, or ‘meanwhile…’, a branch, an orientation of energy that is different from the dominant mainstream. An art practice that indicates an enthusiasm to spread into new fields, searching for possibilities of a new language.
In this search, the borders between art practices dissolve to allow a unique visual language to emerge. On of the clearest examples of this is seen in the discourse of design and art. Until recently, in Indonesia, these two discourses have existed in fairly rigid categories. Design is a matter of how functional objects can be made to solve a specific problem, in which there is no personal content. Meanwhile, art is always different because its content is personal or presents an individual statement about a relevant issue. Design within the concept of art that we are familiar with has always been in second position behind art because its intimacy with industry makes its products less personal because of mass production.
In recent practice, especially in Europe, many designers have begun to leave the conventional behind with products that make a statement or express personal views. This has, in the end, sparked a debate because they have entered the realm of art, particularly contemporary visual art. With the vocabulary of these designers, they have made art forms that are difficult to be categorized by the existing conventions in both art and design discourse. This is why the term “object” has emerged in contemporary visual arts, i.e., art forms that can no longer be categorized in conventional art: a new language that illustrated the dissolution of the boundaries between these two realms.
In this practice, the artists explore and borrow icons or idioms of design with an expressive approach, so that the objects which emerge often remind us of functional objects, but their functions have disappeared and been replaced by a personal statement of art.
This exhibition presents the works of three artists, who have worked intensely for the past two years on creating unique visual languages that illustrate this dissolution of boundaries.

Wiyoga Muhardanto. His creative process proceeds from a criticism of consumer culture. Yoga borrows icons of pop culture and deconstructs them by juxtaposing symbols.
R Yuki Agriardi. His creative process begins with the joy of working with objects that have a functional value (furniture), but unlike other functional objects in general, Yuki makes a space for personal imagination. He attempts to capture how the perceptions of an object can change.
Budi Adi Nugroho. “Now you see it, now you don’t.” This is the phrase that Budi chose to explain his work. He begins his creative process with questions about the reality of an object or material. In a material culture, where the control of materials has become the primary concern of many people’s lives, what is seen by the eye is not always all that is there; a deceitful appearance can carry us far from the actual meaning.

I made this when I feel bored after finishing my final assignment project (around February 2007). My father gave this two canvas about three months before. I finished this drawing around December 2007. I only continued work on this drawing if I got bored, so it takes ten months to finished it.

Since Soemardja gallery build this mini art space, we have a lot of idea to use it. So this is one of our idea, we make an art exhibition but in a mini size. The artworks itself should be max 5x5x5 cm in size (including video). There are twenty persons who joined this exhibition;

This chair was designed for a competition, 2nd NJFDA (National Jepara Furniture Design Award). A wood furniture competition which held every year in Jepara, a city in Center Java (known for its wood carving traditions).

Space.Soemardja gallery, September 8 2006. Bandung, West Java - Indonesia

Each Pollypop species came up to me as fast as you’ve seen the object (with the sound of pop!). Just like when I saw a fox, “Dufus the fox” popped into my mind, and then I transferred the image I had into a Pollypop, and so on.
Thats why I named it Pollypop. Its came from words ‘polly’ and ‘pop’. Polly means 'a lot', and pop is come from a comical sound - pop! - A sound of something came up just like that! From nowhere into my daily life.

The exhibition was held at Space. Soemardja gallery (a mini art space for mini artwork and video screening, its only 25x36x50 cm in size). The opening itself was at the same time with “Japan’s poster exhibition” which held by The Japan foundation at the main gallery.
I exhibited 36 species of my personal pollypop, a journal of my monster research (it contain about 80 species of pollypop which I found in my friends mind) and a collaboration video project; “Pollpop – its popping everywhere!” which I made with my friend Ruddy Hatumena.
